Snowstorm- Steam Boat off a Harbour's Mouth
This oil painting on canvas by J.M.W. Turner, Snowstorm- Steam Boat off a Harbour's Mouth, 1842 is nothing short of amazing. It is beautiful and abstract, but if you look closely, your eyes are drawn to the center of the whirlpool of sky, sea, and cloud to find a steamboat, with its mast bent from the wind. This photo gives off the feeling of complete and utter turmoil. It makes the viewer feel disoriented and off balance, as if they were the ones caught in the storm. The colors Turner chose effectively add to this dark, violent effect.
