Mountain and Sky

This week I chose Emil Nolde's Mountain and Sky, 1938-45 because of its beautiful, rich colors. They are simply amazing. Nolde has a private collection of watercolors and this one is definitely one of the most magnificent. I love the contrast of the purple-blues of the mountain with the red sky. This image is abstract yet you can easily see that it is a view of mountains. In Nolde's watercolors, color seems sensually heightened, subdued, and more transcendental than in his oil paintings. His oil paintings are better known but his watercolors definitely deserve more credit!
