Garden of Earthly Delights

Hieronymous Bosch
Garden of Earthly Delights

With its dark and twisted somewhat surrealism, I find this painting to be fascinating. One of a three-panel painting, this right panel illustrates Hell, demonstrating that temptation of sin leads to evil punishments of Hell. What grabbed my attention immediately was the gradient of this scene: the extremely dark background, the chaos surrounding the focal point in the mid-ground, to the corrupt but rather intriguing foreground. Bosch's use of value and color creates a beautiful contrast that is appealing to the eye, heightens curiosity, and forces the viewer to look all about the painting.
